Bab-Boujloud, the historical gate in the heart of the wonderful Fez



Bab Boujloud

The ancient city of Fez is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and following the traditions of visiting this wonderful city, exploring it -as one of the largest ancient cities in Morocco- begins by entering Boujloud’s Gate or Bab Boujloud as most people In Fez prefer to name it.
Bab Boujloud is among the fantastic huge gates of the spiritual city of Fez, and one of the most important one of the fence surrounding this ancient city and the famous in Fez el-Bali. Exactly in the wide Fez, t is located on the northwestern side overlooking the square of Basha Al-Baghdadi.
Historians point out that its construction completion was in the year of 859, but its current form is due to the renovations in the early 20th century by the municipality of Fez in 1913, yet the French authorities commissioned its General Resident, Marshal Lyautey, after the occupation of Morocco, to restore it in 1915.
Bab Boujloud’s decoration is that the color of its outer mosaic is blue, while the color of its inner mosaic is green. This Gate was originally a camp under an Amazigh name that is {Takrarat} belonging to the Almoravid dynasty, and was rebuilt after them by the Almohad Caliphate.
During the reign of the Marinid dynasty, Bab Boujloud remained of great importance where their first kings settled in, but moved from it after the founding of The New City of Fez (Fez Jdid), where they built their palaces and their notables’ houses and continued visiting it from time to time.
